For nearly 3,000 years, Italy has been producing some great food friendly wine. It’s one of the largest wine producing countries in the world! There are over 2,000 grape varieties scattered about the countryside. Pick wisely and you’ll find some of the world’s best wines.

We’ll explore some of the many regions and discover what sets these grapes apart. We’ll also see how a DOC and DOCG affect every the same food, so you can look like a pro when you purchase your next bottle of Italian wine to pair with your dinner.

If you’re not familiar with Dionysus (aka Bacchus), the Roman Empire certainly was. The God of wine was a personal favorite and he would not be denied.From 300 B.C. to the beginning of the Christian era, the population in Rome exploded from 100,000 people to over a million. The result was an equally sizeable increase in the demand for wine. In 79 A.D. the eruption of Mount Vesuvius gave birth to what is now the world’s most legendary wine regions. Pompeii, the Empire’s largest wine port, was buried in ash. The result was an explosion of vineyards across the region.
